The TOEFL is an exam that is used to measure the English language skills necessary to successfully complete university level study in an English-speaking country.  It is recognized by nearly 9,000 organizations in more than 130 countries around the world.  The English language proficiency exam is administered at thousands of test sites in 165 countries.  Most testing centers offer an Internet-based version of the exam, but there is also a paper and pen version that is offered in locations where the Internet is not available.  Individuals can take test as many times as they want.

Test Format

The exam consists of four sections.  While each section emphasizes a particular skill, the exam is designed to test how well students combine all of the English language skills necessary to study in an English-speaking country.  For example, in the listening section, students may use listening and reading skills.

  • Reading.  The reading portion of the exam has a total of 36-56 questions and measures students’ reading comprehension skills.  Students are asked to read passages and answer questions about what they have read.
  •  Listening.  The listening section is comprised of 34-51 questions and is designed to evaluate how well students understand the English language when it is spoken.  Students listen to recorded lectures and conversations and answer questions about what they have heard.
  • Speaking.  The speaking portion consists of six tasks that measure students’ ability to verbally communicate in English.  In this section, students must speak their answers to a set of assigned questions.
  • Writing.  This section of the exam consists of two writing assignments that measure students’ ability to effectively communicate in writing.

TOEFL Scoring

Each section of the exam is scored from 1-30, and these four scores are added together for an overall test score of 1-120.  Scores are based on how well the questions are answered.  Both automated and human scoring methods are used to develop an accurate assessment of the candidate’s English language skills.

In addition to receiving a scaled score, each candidate receives a performance feedback report that evaluates their performance.  The report lists the types of language activities individuals who receive similar scores can typically perform (e.g. understanding complex conversations, using vocabulary appropriately, etc.).

There is no passing or failing grade.  Each institution that uses the exam to measure students’ English language proficiency determines the score that is acceptable for the individuals they accept into their program(s).

All scores are good for two years and are usually available online approximately 10 days after the test date.  Scores are mailed to candidates about 13 days after the exam.

Preparing for the TOEFL

Adequate preparation is the key to successfully completing any exam, and the TOEFL is no exception.  There are a variety of resources available to help candidates get ready for the test, including study guides, materials that help students’ improve the skills that are tested on the TOEFL, sample test questions and practice exams.

In addition, TOEFL preparation classes and private TOEFL tutors are available to help those students who need extra help studying for the exam.
