SSAT

The SSAT or Secondary School Admission Test is a standardized exam required for admission to 900 private and independent schools in Canada and the United States.  The test is one piece of the admission criteria used to assess a student’s ability to succeed in a private or independent school environment.

The exam is administered to students in grades 3-11.  There are three versions of the test, depending on the age of the child:

  • The “Elementary” exam was introduced in the 2012-2013 academic year and is administered to students in grades 3-4
  • The “Middle” exam is administered to students in grades 5-7
  • The “Upper” exam is administered to students in grades 8-11

Structure

All three levels of the exam (elementary, middle and upper) consist of verbal, reading, quantitative, and writing sections.  The middle and upper level exams may also contain a fifth section that is used to test new exam questions and is not scored.

The verbal section tests students’ vocabulary, critical thinking skills and ability to logically draw conclusions based on the information provided.  The reading section assesses students reading comprehension skills.  The quantitative portion of the exam tests students’ knowledge of age appropriate mathematical concepts and problem solving skills.

The writing sample is not scored, but it is sent to the schools where the applicant is applying.

SSAT Scores

Students in grades 3-4 can earn a score of 300-600 on each section for a maximum score of 900-1800.  Students in grades 5-7 earn scores of 440-710 per section for a total of 1320-2130.  Students in grades 8-11 receive a score of 500-800 per section for a maximum score of 1500-2400.

In addition to their scaled scores, individuals are assigned a percentile that lets them know how their scores compare to the scores of other students who have taken the exam in the last three years.

Students in grades 5-9 also receive an estimated national percentile score which compares their performance to students nationally, regardless of whether or not they have taken the SSAT.

Students in grades 7-10 receive a predicted SAT score, which estimates the score they will receive when they take the SAT exam later in their high school career.

SSAT Administration

There are two types of SSAT test administration—standard and flex.  Standard tests are administered eight times a year on the same day at hundreds of locations around the world.  Students can take the standard test as many times as they want each year.

Flex tests are administered on a date other than the standard dates.  They are offered either in a group or individual setting and are offered multiple times throughout the year.  However, unlike the standard administration of the exam, students can only take one flex test each year.

Preparing for the SSAT

It is important for students to study and prepare for the SSAT as they would for any other test by familiarizing themselves with the material that will be covered as well as the format of the exam.

There are a variety of resources available to help students prepare for the test, including study guides, practice exams and private SSAT tutors.  Students can choose the one that is best for them based on their individual learning style.
