SAT

The SAT is a standardized exam used by most undergraduate institutions in the United States to make admission decisions, and it is being used more frequently by colleges and universities outside of the United States as well.  The SAT is available in more than 180 countries around the world and is designed to assess students’ ability in subjects they are learning in high school, including reading, writing and math.

SAT Structure

The SAT is made up of three parts:

  • Critical Reading.  This section tests students’ reading comprehension skills as well as their ability to draw conclusions based on information that is presented by having them read passages and answer questions about what they have read.
  • Writing.  This part of the exam is comprised of an essay and multiple choice questions.  It measures students’ critical thinking and writing skills as well as their knowledge of proper grammar and usage.
  • Math.  This segment of the SAT tests students’ knowledge of basic mathematical concepts, including statistics, arithmetic, probability, algebra and geometry.

Scores

Scores for each section of the exam range from 200-800.  The writing section also has sub-scores for the essay and multiple choice portions.  A sub-score of 2-12 is assigned to the essay, while a sub-score of 20-80 is assigned to the multiple-choice questions.

In addition to the scaled scores each student receives, they are assigned a percentile value that allows them to compare their performance with the performance of other students who have taken the SAT.  For example, a student who scores in the 80th percentile on the reading section, scored higher than 80 percent of all students who took the exam.

SAT Subject Tests

Students may also choose to take up to three SAT subject tests in addition to the traditional exam.  The subject tests are used to evaluate students’ knowledge in a particular subject, such as history or chemistry.  There are currently 20 SAT subject tests available.

While some undergraduate institutions require the subject tests for admission, most do not.  However, these exams give students an opportunity to enrich their applications and gain an edge over the competition by highlighting specialized knowledge in subjects where they excel.  Furthermore, these tests can be used by universities to make course placement decisions based on students’ performance.

The traditional SAT and the SAT subject tests cannot be taken on the same day.  Students who are planning to take the SAT subject tests should schedule their exams accordingly.

Preparing for the Exam

The information covered on the SAT is material students are learning in school, so the best way to prepare for the exam is to study hard and earn good grades.  Performing well in the classroom will help ensure students have the requisite knowledge to earn a good score on the SAT.  To maximize performance, it is important for students to familiarize themselves with the format and the types of questions that will appear on the exam.

There are many tools available for students to use as they study for the SAT, including study guides, software, classes and private SAT tutors.  Students can choose the resource that works best for them.
