Psychology
According to Merriam Webster, psychology is the science of mind and behavior. The goal of people who study psychology is to learn how the mind influences both individual and group behavior. The study of psychology is comprised of many sub-specialties that focus on specific areas of human behavior from the way people learn to why some people commit crimes and much more.
Psychology was first recognized as a discipline in 1879 when Wilhelm Wundt started the first psychology lab at the University of Leipzig, Germany. His achievement sparked the development of psychological laboratories at colleges and universities around the world.
Over the years, psychology has been dominated by several different schools of thought and has been criticized for the subjectivity of its research methodology. However, today psychology employs widely accepted scientific principles recognized by researchers from a variety of different disciplines.
Careers in Psychology
Individuals who study psychology can pursue a variety of different careers, which can typically be divided into two broad categories—academic and applied psychology. The focus of academic psychology is on building the theoretical framework of the discipline, while applied psychology focuses on applying psychological principles to solve everyday problems. Some examples of careers in psychology include:
- Professors. Individuals who focus on academic psychology often become professors, teaching psychology at the collegiate level and conducting their own academic research to expand the field of study.
- Forensic psychologists. These individuals use psychological principles to help law enforcement officials solve crimes and prosecute criminals.
- Clinical psychologists. When they think of psychology, most people think of the work conducted by clinical psychologists. These professionals work with individuals to diagnose and treat mental health issues.
- Organizational psychologists. Experts who specialize in organizational psychology study employees and their work environment in an effort to help businesses and other organizations operate more effectively.
- Educational Psychologists. These professionals work in academic settings studying the way individuals learn and helping students who experience academic difficulty.
- Environmental Psychologists. Whether it’s the workplace, home or some other setting, these experts study the way individuals interact with their environment.
Studying Psychology
Individuals who study psychology at the collegiate level receive a broad liberal arts education. They learn how to conduct research, interpret data, support their findings and apply what they have learned to help solve every day problems. Those who earn a degree in psychology have many different career paths available to them at the conclusion of their studies.
Individuals who are interested in learning more about the study and practice of psychology can contact their local college or university, the Canadian Psychological Association or hire a psychology tutor to find out if pursuing a career in psychology is right for them.
