MCAT

The MCAT is a standardized exam required for admission to many Canadian medical schools.  If you’re interested in pursuing a career in medicine, the MCAT is a critical factor in determining whether or not you will be able to do so.  The exam assesses students’ problem solving, critical thinking and writing skills as well as their knowledge of the biological and physical sciences.

While the MCAT is a key component used during the admission process, it is not the only one.  Medical schools also look at students’ undergraduate performance, extracurricular activities, recommendations from teachers and faculty members, admission interviews and more when making admission decisions.

The MCAT is offered nine months out of the year, from January-September, and students may take the exam up to three times in a given year.

MCAT Format

There are four parts on the MCAT, including physical sciences, biological sciences, verbal reasoning and writing.  The physical and biological sciences sections of the exam use multiple choice questions to evaluate students’ knowledge of these subjects, which are required for the study of medicine.

The verbal reasoning section is designed to assess students’ ability to comprehend key concepts and draw logical conclusions based on information they have read.  This part of the exam consists of multiple choice questions about the material that is presented.

Two essays comprise the writing segment of the exam.  The written essays are used to evaluate candidates’ reasoning skills as well as their ability to express themselves coherently in writing.

MCAT Scoring

Scoring for all parts of the MCAT exam, except the writing section, is based on the number of correct responses.  Scores range from 1 to 15.  Points are not deducted for incorrect answers.

Each essay in the writing section is scored by two readers and assigned an alphabetic value of J to T with J being the lowest and T being the highest.  Writing section scores are based on how well the student responds to the essay questions.  Students are evaluated on the quality of the argument they present as well as how well they support their argument.

In addition to the scores for each section, a total score for all of the sections is included in the student’s score report.

Preparing for the MCAT

Because the exam covers so much material and plays such a critical role in whether or not students get accepted to medical school, students planning to take the exam should begin preparing several months in advance.  It is important that students familiarize themselves not only with the information they will see on the exam, but also the test format, so there are no surprises on the day of the exam.

A variety of tools, including sample questions, study guides and practice exams have been created to help students study for the MCAT.  For those who need additional assistance, MCAT prep classes and private MCAT tutors can help students prepare, so they can earn the highest score possible on the exam.
