LSAT

One of the items required for admission to law school in Canada, the United States and many other countries, the LSAT is a standardized exam that measures students’ reading and verbal reasoning skills.  While the LSAT is a key requirement for admission to law school, it is not the only factor used by school officials to make admission decisions.  A candidate’s undergraduate G.P.A., letters of recommendation, personal statement and more are used to determine whether or not a student gets accepted into law school.

The LSAT is offered four times a year by the Law School Admission Council.  Many schools require candidates to take the exam by December if they are applying for admission to law school during the following fall.  Students who are not happy with their LSAT score can take the test again to try to improve their score, but they cannot take the exam more than three times in two years.

LSAT Structure

There are five multiple choice sections and one writing section on the LSAT.  Four of the five multiple choice sections are used to determine a candidate’s test score, while the fifth section is not scored.  It is used to test new exam questions.  At the time of the exam, candidates do not know what section won’t be counted in their score.

The multiple choice questions fall into one of three categories:  reading comprehension, analytical reasoning and logical reasoning.  The reading comprehension questions are designed to measure students’ ability to understand information that is presented to them.  The analytical reasoning section tests how well candidates are able to draw reasonable conclusions based on incomplete information.  The logical reasoning questions evaluate students’ critical thinking and analytical skills.

LSAT Scores

LSAT scores are determined based on how many questions are answered correctly on the four multiple choice sections of the exam that are scored.  The minimum score a student can earn is 120 and the maximum score is 180.

In addition to the scaled scores, every student receives a percentile value that gives them an opportunity to see how their score measures up to the scores of other candidates who have taken the exam during the last three years.

Although the LSAT writing section does not receive a score, the Law School Admissions Council sends it to the law schools where the candidate is applying.  Scores are emailed to students three weeks after the exam, and mailed four weeks after the exam.

If a candidate has taken the LSAT more than once within the last five years, all of the scores will be included on the report that is sent to the law schools where they are applying.  Students cannot choose which scores law schools see.

Preparing for the LSAT

Because LSAT scores are such a key factor in determining whether or not a candidate gets accepted to law school, earning a good score is critical to the application process.  Becoming familiar with the material that will be covered as well as the format of the exam can help students maximize their scores.  Students can choose from a variety of materials to help them prepare for the exam, including sample questions, study guides, practice exams, prep classes and LSAT tutors.
