The GMAT is a standardized test required for admission to thousands of business schools around the world. It measures students’ reading, writing, math and analytical skills, and it is one of several factors used by admission officials to evaluate applicants’ aptitude for success in graduate business programs. The exam takes three and a half hours to complete, and scores are good for five years.

GMAT Framework

The GMAT is divided into three sections: the Analytical Writing Assessment, the Quantitative section and the Verbal section. The writing portion of the exam is comprised of two thirty-minute essays designed to assess the ability of applicants to think and write analytically. It does not require specialized knowledge of any particular subject. Instead, general interest topics are used as a basis for the writing assignments. There are no right or wrong answers. Applicants are evaluated on the strength of their arguments, not on their previous knowledge of a particular subject.

The last two parts of the GMAT contain multiple-choice questions. The Quantitative section assesses students’ knowledge of mathematical principles, including basic arithmetic, algebra and geometry, while the Verbal section evaluates applicants’ reading comprehension, reasoning and grammar skills.

Test Administration

The GMAT is an electronic exam administered on computers. Unlike a pencil and paper exam, only one question is presented at a time during the multiple-choice sections of the GMAT. The computer scores the question and uses the answer to determine the next question.

In general, students who answer a question correctly receive a more difficult question, while those who answer incorrectly receive an easier question. Because the computer scores each question as it is answered, students cannot skip questions or go back and change their answers after they have already responded.

Scores for each section of the GMAT range from 200-800. Scores are determined by:

  • the total number of questions answered
  • the number of questions answered correctly
  • the level of difficulty of the questions answered

There is a penalty for not completing the exam, so it is important for students to pace themselves throughout the test to ensure they answer all of the questions.

In addition to a score of 200-800, individuals are assigned a percentile for each section of the exam. The percentile lets students know how their scores compare to those of their peers. For example, a student who scores in the 80th percentile on the Verbal section earned a higher score than 80 percent of the students who also took the exam.

Preparing for the GMAT

There are a variety of resources available to help students prepare for the GMAT, including software, study guides, prep classes and private GMAT tutors. These resources help students familiarize themselves with the test format, review practice questions and develop test-taking strategies for the day of the exam. Taking the time to prepare ensures students perform their best when they take the GMAT.
