(General Educational Development) GED

The GED is an exam that measures an individual’s knowledge of subjects commonly taught in high schools throughout Canada and the United States.  The test was first administered in 1942 and was designed to help members of the military returning from war transition to life as private citizens.

Today it is an accepted measure of high school level proficiency in a variety of subjects and is recognized by many colleges and universities in Canada and the U.S.  Nearly anyone who did not complete high school can take the GED, which is available in English, Spanish and French.  The test must be taken in person at an official GED testing center.  It is not offered online.

GED Subject Exams

The GED consists of five exams, each covering a different subject that is taught at the high school level, including math, reading, writing, science and social studies.  All five exams take more than seven hours to finish and may be completed in one or multiple sessions as required by the testing center.  Additional details about each exam are included below:

  • The math section of the GED consists of both multiple choice and free response questions.  This section of the exam assesses problem solving and data interpretation skills using mathematical concepts all high school students should be familiar with.
  • When completing the reading test, examinees are required to read passages and answer multiple choice questions designed to evaluate their reading comprehension skills.
  • The writing portion of the exam is comprised of multiple choice questions and an essay.  The multiple choice questions test examinees’ knowledge of basic language skills, including proper sentence structure, grammar, mechanics and usage.  The essay is designed to evaluate how well respondents can communicate in writing.
  • The science test is designed to assess students’ knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics and other related subjects that are taught at the high school level.
  • The social studies section assesses examinees’ knowledge of Canadian and world history, civics, geography and economics.

Eligibility

Eligibility requirements for the GED vary by province or territory.  Anyone who is interested in sitting for the exam should contact the GED office in the province or territory where they live for additional information.

GED Scores

Everyone who takes the GED will receive two types of scores—standard and percentile.  Examinees can earn a standard score of 200-800 on each section of the exam.  Standard scores are assigned based on the number of correct responses.  To earn a passing score on the GED, examinees must have a minimum score of 450 on each subject test for a combined total of 2250 points.  The percentile value that is assigned allows examinees to see how their performance compares to high school seniors.

Preparing for the GED

There are many resources available to help individuals interested in taking the GED, prepare for the exam.  Examples include study guides, practice test questions, full-length exams, courses, and GED tutors.  Since the GED requires knowledge of a variety of subjects, taking the time to study will improve students’ chances of passing.  Individuals can contact their local GED office   for additional information about the resources available in their province or territory.
