Economics

Merriam Webster defines economics as “a social science concerned chiefly with description and analysis of the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.”  The study of economics looks at how resources are allocated and can be divided into two broad areas—microeconomics and macroeconomics.

As the prefix “micro” implies, microeconomics focuses on the production and consumption of individuals, businesses or a single market and the interaction between buyers and sellers, while macroeconomics focuses on the production and consumption of economies as a whole.  Microeconomics explores topics such as:

  • Supply and demand.  Supply and demand determine price.  Supply is how much of a particular good or service is available at a certain price.  Demand is how much people are willing to buy of a particular good or service at a certain price.  Price and quantity are inversely related.  As supply increases, cost decreases; and as supply decreases, cost increases.  Market equilibrium occurs when supply equals demand.
  • Opportunity Cost.  Opportunity cost refers to what consumers give up when they choose to purchase a good or service.  Opportunity cost includes things like other goods and services, free time or whatever else the consumer is willing to forego in order to make a purchase.

Macroeconomics looks at factors that impact the economy on a larger scale such as:

  • Unemployment.  The percentage of individuals who are looking for employment, but cannot find a job.  It does not include retirees, students or people who have discontinued their job search.
  • Inflation.  The rise in prices over time.
  • Monetary Policy.  Policies, such as interest rates, made by the government that influences the supply of money.
  • Fiscal policy.  The impact of government spending and taxes on the overall economy.

Studying Economics

Students who choose to study economics should expect a challenging curriculum that builds skills in multiple areas, which can be applied to a variety of jobs after completing their degree.  Students who study economics develop strong mathematical, analytical and problem solving skills as they evaluate and interpret data about a variety of subjects from many different sources.  In addition, economics students cultivate strong communication skills because they are required to present their findings.  Due to the rigorous nature of many economics programs, it’s not unusual for individuals to struggle from time to time.  An economics tutor can help students stay on track by providing one-on-one instruction designed to meet the unique needs of each student.

A Career in Economics

A degree in economics prepares students for a variety of careers after graduation, including:

  • Academia.  Some programs require teachers to have only a master’s degree, but many require a doctorate.
  • Business.  The educational background provided by an economics degree prepares students to predict consumer behavior as well as how macroeconomic factors will influence business.
  • Government.  Many economics majors go on to work for the government studying taxes, unemployment, inflation and other economic indicators in the current market.
  • Law.  Lawyers routinely deal with regulatory and tax issues impacting their clients.  Furthermore, they are frequently required to assign a dollar value to losses in the form of damages, lost wages, medical expenses and more.
