Career Development

According to the Canadian Career Development Foundation, career development is “the lifelong process of managing your living, learning and earning in order to move to where you want to be.”  Career development does not end with a chosen career path, but continues for a lifetime.  How a person chooses to develop their career is a very personal and individualized decision.  However, there are several key elements that are critical to career development no matter who you are.

Identifying Areas of Interest

The first step in the career development process is identifying areas that interest you.  Whether you are still in school or already in the workforce, there are several ways to learn about different career paths.

  • Coursework.  It doesn’t matter if you are a full-time student or a full-time professional.  Taking classes in different subject areas can give you a good idea of whether or not a particular career choice might be right for you.  Students can use elective courses to learn about different subjects and professionals can take courses at night or on the weekends to determine if a particular career is right for them.
  • Summer Jobs.  Students can use summer jobs as a trial run for different career opportunities.  They can take advantage of what they learn during their temporary employment to help narrow their search for a permanent job when the time comes.
  •  Volunteer.  Volunteering is a great way for students and professionals to find out if a certain career path would be a good fit.  Volunteers are often given job duties similar to paid employees, providing good insight into what it would be like to perform a particular job on a regular basis.

Beginning Your Career

After identifying a career path, it is important to get the education and training necessary to secure a job in that field.  Some careers require only a high school diploma, while others require a college degree, vocational certificate or other special training.  If you don’t meet the educational requirements, it is unlikely you will be able to get an entry level job in your chosen field.

Preparing for Advancement Within a Field

Once you have obtained that first job, it’s time to start planning for the future.  Some career paths are very linear with clear requirements that must be met before you can get promoted to the next level, while others are less structured.  To find out what is required to advance in your particular field, talk to your boss, mentor or HR representative.  These individuals can help you identify the requirements necessary to advance within the organization.

Changing Careers

If you find you don’t like the career you have chosen or your career is not progressing as you had hoped, you may consider changing careers.  But changing careers is a big decision.   While many of the skills you have developed in your current position are transferrable, you may still need additional education and/or training before you make the leap.  You can gain the experience you need by going back to school, volunteering or getting a part time job.

Career Development Help

If you’re struggling with your career development, there are a variety of resources available to help you get on track.  Colleges and universities have career development centers that are dedicated to helping students identify the best possible careers for them.  Non-profit organizations exist to help employed and unemployed professionals meet their career development goals.  Career development tutors or counselors are available to help individuals develop a plan that meets their unique needs.
