Description: I am a Mechanical Engineerin in Training, currently working full time. I have a wide variety of skills and knowledge that I think I could share, including my passion for cooking.

Not really doing this for the money, my rate is flexible. I just want to share what I know.

I graduated from Waterloo University 2 years ago, and have been working locally since. With my background in Mechanical Engineering, I would be most able to help with physics and calculus courses, or anything math based.

Would be completely useless for biology and chemistry, unless you want me to yell at you to study more.

Anything math related for elementary school is something I should be able to handle with no issues.

AP

AP or advanced placement courses give high school students an opportunity to take college level courses during high school.  AP classes are typically offered to high school juniors and seniors.  When students complete a course, they are given an opportunity to take an exam and earn college credit for their expertise in a particular subject.

According to the College Board, almost 17,000 high school students in Canada took AP exams in 2012.  There are 34 AP exams available in the following subjects:

  • arts,
  • English,
  • history and social sciences
  • math/computer science
  • sciences
  • languages and cultures

How to Choose an AP Course

AP courses are typically more challenging than traditional high school courses, so it’s important for students to be adequately prepared before they enroll. Talking to teachers and other students who have taken AP classes can help them set appropriate expectations about the workload and difficulty of the course.

It is important for students to remember that all AP courses are not offered at every school.  So, they should talk to school officials to find out which classes are offered at their school.

Taking AP Exams

Students do not have to take an AP course to take the AP exam.  However, it is recommended because the classes help students prepare for the exams and increase the likelihood of earning a good score.  Exams are offered in May each year at the high schools where the courses are offered.  Students who are homeschooled or who go to schools where AP courses are not offered may take the exams at schools where the courses are offered.

AP Exam Preparation

The best way to prepare for an AP exam is to take the corresponding AP course.  AP classes provide a year-long in-depth review of all of the material that will be covered on the exam.  However, as the exam approaches, it is a good idea for students to study for it as they would any other test.  There are a variety of materials that can help students prepare and earn the highest score possible, including essay questions from old exams, subject study guides and sample multiple choice questions.  Those who need extra attention can work with an AP tutor who can provide a customized review for the exam.

AP Exam Scores

Scores for multiple choice questions are based on the number of correct answers, while scores for essay questions are assigned by AP teachers and college professors who assess the overall quality of the response.  The scores are combined for a total score, which is assigned an AP value of 1 (low) to 5 (high).  Score reports are sent to students in July and include scores from all of the AP exams a student has ever taken unless they ask to have a score withheld.

Earning College Credit

Every college or university determines what score a student needs to achieve to earn college credit.  For example, University 1 may give students who earn a 4 or 5 on the AP Psychology exam three undergraduate credits, while University 2 may give students credit for scores of 3, 4 or 5.

How Students Benefit From AP Credit

There are many benefits for students who take AP exams and earn scores that qualify them for college credit.  They may not need to take introductory level courses that are required of most freshmen, giving them more flexibility to take courses they are interested in.  In addition, students who have the greatest number of credits usually get to register for classes first.  Finally, the extra credits can give students the opportunity to graduate earlier, add a minor or study two majors.
