Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is a software program used to create and edit images.  Introduced by Adobe in 1982, Photoshop is one of the most popular photo editing software programs available today.  It is commonly used by amateur and professional photographers, graphic designers and magazine editors, but the software can be used by anyone who is interested in creating and/or editing images.  Photoshop is compatible with both the Windows and MacOS operating systems and can be purchased online or in retail outlets.

Features

While Photoshop can be used to create and edit vector-based graphics, its strength lies with the creation of bitmap images.  Below is a list of just some of the tools that will assist individuals who use Photoshop.

  • Color.  Photoshop’s powerful color adjustment tools allow users to enhance the colors of images.  Photos that are too light or dark can quickly and easily be adjusted with the click of a button, so colors are true to life.  Color correcting that used to take place in a lab can now be achieved with a few clicks of a mouse.
  • Drawing.  Drawing tools allow individuals to create vector-based images and outlines that can be used to select part of an image.
  • Painting.  The painting tools in Photoshop can be used in two ways—to add color to an image or edit existing colors.
  • Selection.  Selection tools give users the ability to select all or part of an image for editing.
  • Editing.  A variety of tools in Photoshop can be used to edit images by applying special effects, retouching and reshaping images and more.
  • Video.  Video images can also be edited using Photoshop.  Nearly all of the tools that can be used to edit still images can also be used to edit videos.  (The audio portion of a video cannot be edited with Photoshop.)

Get Help With Adobe Photoshop

Because Photoshop is such a powerful program with so many features, it can be overwhelming to try to learn how to use the program without any direction.  There are a variety of resources available to help new users familiarize themselves with the program and experienced users take advantage of Photoshop’s full capabilities.

  • Photoshop Help Menu.  The help menu explains how the tools within Photoshop can be used to create and/or enhance images.
  • Online Tutorials.  These guides provide step-by-step instructions about how to use the different features within Photoshop.  Tutorials allow users to work at their own pace.
  • Classes/Seminars.  Instructor-led courses provide detailed instruction about using Photoshop.  With a teacher who can demonstrate how the different elements of Photoshop work and answer questions, in-person classes and seminars are one of the most effective ways to learn the ins and outs of the program.
  • Photoshop Tutors.  For users who need more individualized instruction than a group class can provide, Photoshop tutors can show users how to take advantage of Photoshop’s features.
