ADD

The Centre for ADHD Awareness, Canada says ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), also known as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), is a “chronic condition…[with] three core symptoms; the inability to regulate attention, the inability to regulate activity, and difficulty with inhibitory behavior resulting in impulsivity.”  According to the Centre for ADHD Awareness, Canada, children with ADHD are five times as likely as children without ADHD to have a family member with the disorder.

Symptoms

ADD symptoms are often dismissed as normal childhood behavior.  Because of this, it can take years for children who suffer from the disorder to be properly diagnosed.  Most children, even those who do not have ADD, exhibit some of the symptoms associated with the disorder. However, it is the degree, frequency and timing of the symptoms that separate children who have ADD from those who don’t.  Children with ADD experience severe symptoms on a regular basis in multiple settings (i.e. home, school, extracurricular activities, etc.).

Below is a list of symptoms that are frequently observed in people with ADD:

  • Inability to concentrate or remain focused on a particular activity for a long period of time
  • Inability to follow directions
  • Poor organizational skills
  • Difficulty remembering
  • Easily distracted.  Children with ADD frequently start, but don’t finish tasks
  • Frequent mistakes because they don’t pay attention to details
  • Put off doing things
  • Inability to follow a conversation.  Kids who have ADD often don’t pay attention to what is being said and interrupt others when they are speaking

Diagnosis

ADD symptoms are similar to those of other diseases and disorders.  If a child is believed to have ADD, they should see a doctor for assessment and diagnosis.  During the evaluation process, the doctor may ask parents and teachers to answer a series of questions to find out what symptoms the child has, when the child started exhibiting symptoms, how long they’ve been occurring, when and where they occur.  The doctor may also conduct additional testing to eliminate other possible causes and help diagnose the patient.

Treatment

ADD treatment requires a multi-disciplinary treatment plan that usually involves both behavioral therapy and medication.  Kids with ADD need extra parental and teacher involvement to cope with their diagnosis and succeed academically.  Continued follow-up is necessary to evaluate how well a child’s treatment plan is working and make changes if necessary.

Children with ADHD frequently have difficulty in school.  So it is critical to identify the condition as soon as possible and begin treatment early before the child falls behind.  The following practices have been used to help children manage ADD:

  • Be as consistent as possible
  • Remove distractions
  • Praise positive behavior
  • Work with an ADD tutor

These are just a few of the techniques that can help students who have ADD.  There are many others.  Because every child is different, it’s important that a unique treatment plan be designed that specifically addresses the individual needs of the child.
