Find an ACT Tutor

The ACT is a standardized exam that measures high school students’ proficiency in the areas of English, reading, math, science and writing.  The exam is used by colleges and universities in the United States to help administration officials make admission decisions.  Scoring well on the ACT exam is an important part of the admission process.  However it is only one factor colleges and universities use to determine whether or not an applicant will be accepted.  They also consider grades, extracurricular activities, class rank, application essays, admission interviews (if applicable) and more.

There are six ACT testing dates a year in Canada, the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. territories.  Students who are not satisfied with their initial score on the exam may take the test as many as 12 times.

ACT Structure

Students may choose to take one of two versions of the exam—the ACT or the ACT Plus Writing.  Both forms of the test evaluate students on their English, reading, math and science skills, while the ACT Plus Writing also includes an essay.  Some colleges and universities require students to take the version with the writing section, while others do not.

The math section evaluates students’ proficiency in pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and trigonometry and contains 60 questions.  The English portion of the exam consists of 75 questions and tests students’ knowledge of basic grammar and usage skills, including punctuation, sentence structure, content organization and more.

The reading section tests candidates’ reading comprehension skills.  Students must read excerpts provided on the exam and answer a series of 40 questions about what they have read.  There are 40 science questions that test a range of skills required for the study of scientific concepts, including data interpretation and problem solving.

On the ACT Plus Writing version of the exam, students are also required to write an essay to ensure their writing skills are up to par with those of college freshmen.

ACT Scores

Students can earn a score of 1-36 on each of the math, English, reading and science portions of the exam.  The scores for these sections are determined by the number of questions that are answered correctly.  Candidates who take the ACT Plus Writing version of the test will receive a score of 1-6 from each of two readers who are assigned to evaluate the writing portion of their exam.

Students are also given a percentile that allows them to compare their performance to that of high school graduates who recently took the exam.  Students are typically able to view their math, English, reading and science scores online two and a half weeks after they take the ACT.  Writing scores are usually available about five weeks after the test date.

If a student has taken the ACT more than once, their scores are not automatically sent to the colleges to which they are applying.  Only those scores selected by the student are released to the colleges they choose.

Preparing for the ACT

High school students who plan to take the ACT should regularly attend class, complete all of their required assignments, study for exams and earn good grades.  However, as with any test, it is a good idea for students to familiarize themselves with the format of the ACT and the material it will cover.

There are a variety of resources available to help students study for the ACT and maximize their score, including study guides, sample questions, practice exams, prep classes and ACT tutors.  Students can choose the option that best fits their schedule, budget and learning style.
